RateSetter is a P2P lender that, by creating its service in a way that looks and feels close to conventional savings accounts, has created its niche.

Thus, for those who are P2P novices, the company, which links lenders and borrowers, is known as a well-regarded firm.

We will check at the way Ratesetter functions in this post, what prices are offered and the maxi and min amounts you can invest (and borrow).

But we should emphasize the mantra of every peer-to-peer investment prior we dig into this: your money is at risk and you could lose a part or the sum of your assets.

This article is portion of a larger investment series dealing with all aspects of buy-to-let, P2P and alternative investment stocks and shares.

What's RateSetter?

RateSetter was established by Rhydian Lewis in 2010 and over 62,633 lenders have utilized it to lend over 2.4B GBP.

For the past 3 years, the readers of the financial data platform Moneyfacts have named RateSetter the P2P Provider of the Year.

To whom do they lend?

It loans  to individuals or to corporations.

What are the available products?

For lenders

You begin by making a decision on how much you should lend: you may begin with 10 GBP.

You determine how long to invest for.

You can choose "rolling" from which you can walk away with zero penalty at all times.

Alternatively, for a better exchange rate, you can have fixed periods of 1-5 years in return.

At all moments, you can cash out of them as long as the loan can be paired with another lender.

There is a transaction charge of 0.3 percent for 1 year and 1.5 percent for the 5-year option.

Lastly, you determine what rate you wish to have: you can select the marketplace rate or choose your own.

You are then be connected by those conditions with a borrower satisfied with them.

You would not be taking on more risk if you select a rate that is bigger than the marketplace rate, but you will have to wait for a bigger stretch of time  to fit with a borrower.

You can at the moment get three percent on the entry account and 3.7 percent on the 5-year account to get an idea of the rates you could get (after charges and bad debts have been factored in).

RateSetter provides an Innovative Finance ISA, that lets in ISA transactions.

ISA investors can choose a rolling marketplace option, 1 year or 5-year choices, much like the normal investment picks, and there are early withdrawal charges again.

For borrowers

Depending on the situation, you may borrow £1,K-£25K.

Depending on the situation, you can have the finds for between 6 months and 5 years and you can pay the loan off early with no penalty.

What kind of security is there?

As with every P2P lender, security begins with the testing by RateSetter of the creditworthiness of those it lends to.

There is a risk, though, of defaults. You risk losing cash if you lend to a person who doesn't pay.

The firm has a Provision Fund to alleviate that, which is structured to recover any cash that you may end up losing (like lots of other peer-to-peer lenders).

It has repaid each penny to date, but there are zero warrants.

It is worth noting that following the last financial crisis, the company and the majority P2P lenders were introduced, so they saw some comparatively calmer waters than more experienced companies.

It isn't covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, like all P2P sites.

This ensures that you would not have the equal kinds of assurances in place if the company was to go bankrupt.
